What makes FireRed team building different

• Gen 3 type chart — no Fairy. Dark and Steel exist, but many modern answers do not.
• HM slaves matter. Cut, Surf, Strength, Flash, Rock Smash, and Waterfall still tax the party.
• National dex is gated. Plan with what is catchable in Kanto first; transfers are optional.
• Elite Four is type-themed. Lorelei, Bruno, Agatha, and Lance punish mono-type cores hard.

Core roles for a FireRed party

1. Starter axis — Venusaur walls Water/Ground; Charizard needs Rock answers; Blastoise hates Grass/Electric.
2. Electric or Grass — answers Water spam from Misty through the Sevii routes.
3. Ground or Fighting — punches Steel/Normal and helps late game.
4. Psychic or Ghost — covers Fighting and Poison cores common in Kanto.
5. Ice or Rock coverage — critical for Lance’s Dragonite line if your STAB cannot touch them.
6. Utility / HM flex — Surf plus a second Water move often live on the same mon.

Type holes FireRed players create by accident

• Too much Fire + Flying. Rock and Electric become run-enders.
• No Ground answer for Electric. Lt. Surge is early; late Electric still appears.
• Ignoring Ice into Lance. If nothing hits Dragon well, the run stalls.
• Six special attackers. Physical walls in the late game eat the party alive.

2. Add six species available in the Kanto dex for your version.
3. Watch the defense tally — red means multiple teammates are weak there.
4. Swap one mon at a time until red tiles drop and STAB coverage spreads out.

Kanto Gym Leaders & Elite Four Breakdown

FireRed and LeafGreen follow classic Kanto progression where Gym typing dictates early team recruitment:

• Early Game (Brock, Misty, Surge): Bulbasaur crushes Brock and Misty. Charmander requires Mankey (Route 3) for Brock and Pikachu (Viridian Forest) or Oddish/Bellsprout for Misty. Surge's Raichu demands Diglett from Diglett's Cave.
• Mid Game (Erika, Koga, Sabrina): Erika folds to Flying/Fire STAB; Koga's Poison/Bug needs Psychic (Alakazam, Hypno, Kadabra) or Ground; Sabrina's Alakazam needs strong physical priority (Snorlax Body Slam/Shadow Ball, Dodrio Drill Peck).
• Late Game & Elite Four: Blaine (Fire), Giovanni (Ground), Lorelei (Ice/Water), Bruno (Fighting/Rock), Agatha (Ghost/Poison), Lance (Dragon/Flying), and Rival Blue. Snorlax, Starmie/Lapras (Surf + Ice Beam + Thunderbolt), and Jolteon make the Elite Four straightforward.

Kanto Starter Cores

• Venusaur Core: Venusaur (Grass/Poison) + Arcanine/Charizard (Fire) + Starmie/Lapras (Water/Ice) + Jolteon (Electric) + Snorlax (Normal/Bulk) + Aerodactyl/Dodrio (Flying).
• Charizard Core: Charizard (Fire/Flying) + Nidoking/Nidoqueen (Ground/Poison) + Lapras (Water/Ice) + Raichu/Jolteon (Electric) + Exeggutor (Grass/Psychic) + Snorlax.
• Blastoise Core: Blastoise (Water) + Arcanine (Fire) + Vileplume/Victreebel (Grass/Poison) + Alakazam (Psychic) + Jolteon (Electric) + Snorlax (Normal).
