Pokemon Dual Type Chart: How Two Types Combine

Read 4x weaknesses, quarter resistances, and type immunities without guessing

A Pokemon dual type chart is useful because the second type changes the answer you get from a normal type chart. A Fire/Flying Pokemon is not merely “Fire plus Flying”: Rock hits it for 4x damage, Ground does nothing, and Grass is resisted twice. The rule is simple—multiply the two defensive modifiers—but using it well means checking the exact combination rather than relying on a loose type triangle.

The rule in one line

Final type multiplier = modifier against type one × modifier against type two. A 2× weakness and another 2× weakness become 4×. Two ½× resistances become ¼×. If either defensive type is immune, the final multiplier is 0×.

How to read a dual type chart

Start with the attacking type, then find its result against each of the defender’s types. In the modern type chart, super-effective is 2×, resisted is ½×, neutral is 1×, and immune is 0×. Multiply the pair. This applies to defensive typing; the attacking Pokemon’s types do not change the defensive multiplier.

Three examples that explain most mistakes

Fire/Flying: Rock is 4×, Ground is 0×

Rock is super effective against both Fire and Flying, so the result is 4×. Ground is super effective against Fire but has no effect on Flying, so 2 × 0 is 0. That is why the same dual type can look extremely fragile in one matchup and extremely safe in another.

Water/Ground: Electric is 0×, Grass is 4×

Ground removes the usual Electric weakness of Water, because Ground is immune to Electric. Grass is super effective against both Water and Ground, producing a 4× weakness. A good team does not just celebrate the Electric immunity; it also makes sure Grass pressure has a real answer.

Steel/Fairy: several useful resistances, not a free pass

Steel and Fairy combine to resist many common attacking types, but Ground and Fire are still important weaknesses. “Great defensive typing” is not the same as “safe in every battle.” Actual moves, ability effects, speed, recovery, and the next opponent decide whether a switch is practical.

Why dual types matter more when building a full team

One 4× weakness is manageable when another healthy member resists or ignores the same attacking type. It becomes a team problem when three slots share the weakness, or when the only theoretical answer is too frail to switch in. That is why a party should be checked as a group rather than by giving every member a different primary type.

  1. Add the two or three Pokemon you are committed to using.
  2. On the Defense board, open the most negative rows and identify the contributing members.
  3. Look for a legal candidate that resists or is immune to the repeated attack type.
  4. Recheck the board after one change; do not trade one 4× problem for two new team-wide holes.

Generation differences you should not ignore

There is no single type chart for every Pokemon game. Fairy was introduced in Generation VI, and earlier generations have different individual interactions. Pick the game first so a Gen 1, Gen 2–5, or Gen 6+ conclusion is not silently applied to the wrong adventure. Type is also only one layer. Levitate-like effects, Terastallization, ability-based immunities, move coverage, and field effects can change a real battle. The builder’s type board deliberately evaluates the visible typing layer; it is a fast structural check, not a damage simulator.

A dual-type checklist before you lock a slot

  • What are this Pokemon’s 4× weaknesses, if any?
  • Which of its apparent weaknesses become neutral or immune because of the second type?
  • Does the rest of the party cover the dangerous rows, not only the attractive resistances?
  • Is that Pokemon actually available in the selected game and useful at this point in the run?
  • Do its real moves and ability change the plan outside the type chart?

How do dual types work in Pokemon?

Does an immunity override a weakness?

Yes. If one defensive type is immune, the multiplication includes zero, so the final type-chart result is zero.

Can a type chart choose my best teammate?

No. It can expose type-level gaps, but availability, moves, abilities, stats, items, and the battle format still need a separate decision.
