Sword/Shield
Pokemon Sword Team Builder
A Pokemon Sword team builder (and the Shield twin) should help you survive Galar’s gym gauntlet without stacking the same weakness six times. Dynamax is loud, but type math still decides who walks into the Champion Cup looking prepared.
Open the Sword / Shield planner for live defense and STAB tallies, or lock roles with this checklist first.
What makes this game’s team building different
- Galar dex + DLC options — plan with what this site’s Sword/Shield list includes for your run rules.
- Dynamax is not a free pass — a bad type core still folds between max phases.
- Weather and terrain themes appear, but a neutral balanced team clears the story.
- Late dragons and steels punish parties that only prepared for early gyms.
Core roles for your party
- Starter axis — Rillaboom, Cinderace, or Inteleon each create different holes; plug them early.
- Electric or Grass — Water traffic is constant across Galar routes.
- Ground or Fighting — punches Steel, Electric, and Normal problems.
- Fairy or Ice — dragons and dark/fighting cores show up hard later.
- Ghost / Dark / Psychic — mid-game walls and Ghost wings of the path.
- Bulky pivot — one mon that can switch in more than once per fight.
Sample skeleton

- Electric or Grass pivot
- Ground / Fighting breaker

Open builder →Common type traps
- Three Fire-types because Cinderace culture is loud — then every Water route hurts.
- No Ground answer when Electric keeps appearing.
- Ignoring Ice/Fairy into late dragons.
- Six glass cannons that Dynamax cannot babysit forever.
How to use the planner
- Select Sword / Shield in the game grid.
- Fill six from the Galar-oriented dex list.
- Watch defense for stacked Ice, Fighting, and Ground weaknesses.
- Spread STAB types until offense is not two colors only.
- Copy the share URL for notes or co-op drafts.
Galar (SwSh) notes
- Dynamax era does not erase type math — a bad Ice hole is still a bad Ice hole after Max moves.
- DLC dex expansion can refill coverage late; plan a core six first, then plug with Crown/Isle tools.
- Vs SV: Galar and Paldea both reward flexible sixth slots — see Scarlet team builder.
Galar Gym Challenge & Champion Leon Prep
Pokémon Sword and Shield center on stadium battles, Dynamax mechanics, and the Wild Area:
- Version Exclusive Gyms: Sword features Bea (Fighting) and Gordie (Rock); Shield features Allister (Ghost) and Melony (Ice). Plan flexible Fairy/Flying and Fire/Ground slots to adapt.
- Dynamax Strategy for Story Runs: Use Max Airstream (Flying) for team-wide Speed boosts, Max Geyser/Max Flare for weather control, and Max Knuckle/Max Ooze for Attack/Sp. Atk ramps.
- Champion Leon Breakdown: Leon's team includes Aegislash (King's Shield), Dragapult (extreme Speed), Haxorus, starter counter, and Gigantamax Charizard (Solar Beam/Max Overgrowth to lure Water-types!). A bulky Rock-type (Coalossal, Tyranitar, Drednaw) or Electric pivot (Toxtricity, Corviknight) shuts down Charizard safely.
Galar Starter Cores
- Cinderace (Fire): Pair with Corviknight (Steel/Flying), Inteleon/Drednaw (Water), Toxtricity (Electric/Poison), Grimmsnarl (Dark/Fairy), and Excadrill (Ground/Steel).
- Inteleon (Water): Pair with Corviknight (Steel/Flying), Centiskorch/Coalossal (Fire), Toxtricity (Electric/Poison), Dragapult (Dragon/Ghost), and Obstagoon (Dark/Normal).
- Rillaboom (Grass): Pair with Corviknight (Steel/Flying), Barraskewda/Gyarados (Water), Cinderace/Arcanine (Fire), Grimmsnarl (Dark/Fairy), and Toxtricity (Electric/Poison).
FAQ
Does this Pokemon Sword team builder work for Shield?
Yes. Sword and Shield share the same planner mode. Version exclusives differ — draft with your version in mind.
Do you model Dynamax damage?
No. The board focuses on types and STAB coverage. Treat Dynamax as a combat layer after the six are type-stable.
Can I share my Galar team?
Yes. Draft six, copy the URL, and the party stays in the page hash.
