X/Y
Pokemon XY Team Builder
A Pokemon XY team builder has to respect Kalos’s big rules change: Fairy is online, megas are shiny toys, and a lazy Dragon stack suddenly looks fragile. If you are searching for an XY planner, you want coverage — not six megas with the same Ice weakness.
Draft in the X / Y planner and keep the defense board honest before the Elite Four.
What makes this game’s team building different
- Fairy type changes the meta of story teams — Dragons are no longer automatic late-game win buttons.
- Megas compress roles — strong, but they can hide terrible base coverage if you are not careful.
- Kalos routes reward mixed cores over six special attackers.
- Ice and Fairy answers matter earlier than many players expect.
Core roles for your party
- Starter identity — Chesnaught, Delphox, or Greninja each demand different answers.
- Fairy or Steel — for dragons and dark edges of the region.
- Electric or Ground — Water and Electric traffic still decide mid-game.
- Fighting or Dark — punches Normal and Psychic walls.
- Ice or Rock coverage — flyers and remaining dragons.
- Bulky glue — a pivot that is not pure glass.

Kalos (XY) notes
- Fairy type arrives — Dragon cores need real answers; Fairy STABs change mid-game gym math.
- Mega evolution can paper over a bad sixth slot for one fight but not a whole run — still fix base types.
- Next remakes: Hoenn ORAS lessons sit next door — see ORAS team builder.
Kalos 3D Gym Progression & Fairy-Type Era
Pokémon X and Y introduced the Fairy type, which fundamentally reshaped Dragon, Dark, and Fighting interactions:
- Gym Gauntlet & Mega Evolution: Viola (Bug), Grant (Rock), Korrina (Fighting - gives Mega Lucario), Ramos (Grass), Clemont (Electric), Valerie (Fairy), Olympia (Psychic), Wulfric (Ice).
- Fairy-Type Advantages: Fairy types like Sylveon, Gardevoir, Florges, and Azumarill are immune to Dragon and resist Dark/Fighting/Bug, giving you immediate switch-ins against Lysandre and the Elite Four.
- Elite Four & Champion Diantha: Malva (Fire), Wikstrom (Steel), Drasna (Dragon), Siebold (Water), and Diantha (Hawlucha, Tyrantrum, Aurorus, Gourgeist, Goodra, Mega Gardevoir). Carry Steel STAB (Aegislash, Lucario) for Diantha's Gardevoir and Rock/Ground for Malva.
Kalos Starter & Kanto Mega Starter Cores
- Greninja (Water/Dark): Pair with Mega Charizard Y (Fire/Flying), Aegislash (Steel/Ghost), Garchomp (Ground/Dragon), Sylveon (Fairy), and Heliolisk (Electric/Normal).
- Delphox (Fire/Psychic): Pair with Mega Blastoise (Water), Chesnaught/Gogoat (Grass), Talonflame (Flying), Tyrantrum (Rock/Dragon), and Lucario (Steel/Fighting).
- Chesnaught (Grass/Fighting): Pair with Mega Charizard X or Mega Blaziken (Fire), Greninja/Clawitzer (Water), Florges (Fairy), Noivern (Flying/Dragon), and Magnezone (Electric/Steel).
FAQ
Does this cover both X and Y?
Yes. X and Y share the same planner mode. Version exclusives differ by game.
Do you include Mega evolutions in the type board?
You can draft mega forms when the dex list includes them; the board reads the form’s types.
Is this for competitive XY formats?
It is optimized for story type coverage and shareable parties, not full VGC sets.
